How can I recognize truly sustainable sportswear and which seals are important?

Sustainable, fair, low in pollutants – or just greenwashing? How do you actually recognize sustainable sports fashion?

We explain which seals really guarantee sustainability and which material you should choose for your leggings, bras and tops if you want to make a sustainable purchase decision.

What does "truly sustainable" mean for sportswear?

Sustainability is not a single feature, but a combination of material, certificates and durability. Pay particular attention to three points when buying your sustainable sportswear:

Materials: preferably natural or recycled fibers, e.g. organic cotton, Tencel or recycled polyester.

Certification: sustainable seals that identify the fabric and the production chain as sustainable.

Longevity: high quality, comfort and styles that you really wear often and that are easy to combine.

Mandala uses only natural and recycled materials. Our sportswear is comfortable on the skin and adapts to every body shape. Our styles can be easily combined with each other - regardless of the season.

Which seals are important for sustainability in fashion?

Labels are your compass in the label jungle - they are no substitute for thinking for yourself, but they make it easier for you to recognize trustworthy products. Here are some of the most important ones:

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

GOTS is one of the strictest seals for natural fibers such as organic cotton. It ensures that the majority of the fiber comes from controlled organic cultivation and at the same time limits the use of chemicals in dyeing and finishing. This means less waste ends up on your skin - and in the environment. It also guarantees high social standards. It therefore combines sustainability with fairness in one label.

Organic Content Standard (OCS)

OCS confirms the proportion of organic fibers in the product. It says: "There really is organic in here." Perfect if you want to be sure that "organic" is not just marketing, but is actually in the material.

Global Recycled Standard (GRS)

When you choose sports bras, leggings or tops made from recycled fibers, you help to conserve resources and keep existing materials in the cycle for longer. The Global Recycled Standard guarantees that recycled materials meet chemical and ecological standards during production.

PETA-Approved Vegan

This label shows you that the product is completely free of animal ingredients and meets PETA's criteria for vegan fashion. Especially in yoga and activewear, this is a strong signal for a conscious, cruelty-free lifestyle.

Mandala for example, works with just such standards and shows transparently which materials are used and which seals individual styles carry. You can read more about all our certifications here.

How can I recognize sustainable sportswear when I buy it?

So that you don't have to spend hours researching your next online purchase, here is a short checklist:

Study material

For example, does it say organic cotton, TENCEL™ or recycled polyester - or just "polyester" without any further information? The more specific, the better.

Search for certificates

Do you find GOTS, OCS, PETA-Approved Vegan or other seals? Are there at least references to recycled materials? If yes: plus point. If no: see if the brand at least explains its standards.

Check the transparency of the brand

Is there a sustainability page on which materials, origin and seals are explained in an understandable way? Brands that have nothing to hide talk openly about it and try to show everything as transparently as possible.

Sustainable sportswear as part of your practice

In the end, it's not about being perfect, but more conscious. Your sportswear is part of your self-care routine: it should feel good - on your skin, during training and in your heart. When you focus on clear materials, meaningful labels and transparent brands, every pair of leggings, every top and every sports bra becomes a small statement: for your body, for the planet and for a community of women who don't just want to do sport, but actively want to make a difference.
